Tobii eye tracker

Tobii eye tracker

During March and April we are adding eye tracking for free to all of our usability research labs.

The use of eye tracking to support other lab based research methodologies has greatly improved over the past couple of years with the development of reliable, stable hardware and software tools from Tobii.

Quick set up and the fact that the eye tracking hardware is housed in an unobtrusive way, in fact you can’t actually see it, means we can now integrate this research into our labs without the worry of system crashes half way through a session.

Leading experts

Becky Tindle, who previously worked at Bunnyfoot’s London research labs as Usability and Accessibility Consultant, has long been an advocate of eye tracking as a method of investigating user behaviour during lab based research.

Becky added, “eye tracking is an excellent tool that enables you to see your product through users’ eyes. Used whilst observing behaviour as users interact on screen and talk aloud, it can be a powerful tool. We also encourage the use of retrospective protocol where appropriate, for example, during summative lab sessions.”

However, eye tracking is not a magic solution to the needs of all research projects and often we advise against testing using eye tracking as results can be misleading depending on the interface being researched and the audience researching it.

This approach goes against a number of established agencies who are guilty of pushing eye tracking on a client because it’s glamorous and tangible. Be warned, in the wrong hands or on the wrong project, eye tracking will do more harm than good.

Why are you using the Tobii technology? They promise a lot, but deliver not as much. There is much better equipment available from SDI, Seeing Machines, and others. It does not say much for your services if they are based on equipment that is not the most accurate.

We have used Tobii for a while and whilst their old software was a bit flakey, their new kit is great. As for our services, well you’ll have to ask our clients about that, but all I can say is that we are leading the field of eye-tracking and reactional lab based usability research. Accuracy wise, we don’t rely just on eye-tracking for any research, so I can’t comment on that, but so far it’s been spot on.
I’ll look into SDI, etc and thanks for the recommendations, if you have more info that might help please let me know.

Interesting comment. I would like to know more about you and the claims you have there. What kind of experiences do you have?

I believe that in the last years much more academic and commercial publications were made based on the usage of Tobii systems than with any other eye tracking systems. You can check that on Google scholar research. Also regarding the customers and references that Tobii has, you will find basically the complete who-is-who in academic and commercial research. How would that be possible if the accuracy and technology would be so bad?

Please don’t take this as an offence, but can you prove any of the claims you posted? Even on google I couldn’t find SDI in Germany. How sure are you that you don’t mean SMI???

Please feel free to contact me if you want to discuss further: robertino.pereira@tobii.com.

Hi, the lead poster has been spamming blogs regarding Tobii equipment a lot recently, including a students blog page, and other websites. I, like Robertino, challenged the accuracy of his claims and offered to have a multi unit side-by-side shoot out with various brands (and he means SMI not SDI - hence there is a limited amount of industry knowledge demonstrated here) and received no reply.

Becky is correct in that Tobii is the market leading solution, allows for greater freedom of head movement, faster and more stable calibration and the most flexible out of the box solution on the market.

I will restate our offer of comparing different solutions in a comparitive test to show our confidence in the Tobii solution.
